EQ-SFM-MAX-V1.3 - High-speed I/O Driver Module for PPM3-MK2 / PPM4-MK1 Programmer

 
 
 
The EQ-SFM-MAX-1.3 is the latest ‘I/O Driver Module’ (Special Function Module) for the PPM3-MK2 Programmer. It features a new high-speed I/O driver circuit which supports SPI frequencies up to 3.6864 MHz and JTAG frequencies up to 4MHz. The increased SPI / JTAG frequencies allows Atmel AVR devices to be programmed much faster than with the standard 'Special Function Module'. The new module also has comprehensive ESD and Over-voltage protection per programmer I/O driver pin making it suitable for use in hostile production
environments.

The EQ-SFM-MAX-1.3 also features an on-board 32.768 kHz precision oscillator which can be used for very accurate calibration (+/- 1%) of an AVR Internal RC Oscillator. This module replaces the EQ-SFM-V1.2 Module and the CALCON module.

How do I swap the Special Function Module ?

Main Features
  • Faster I/O Line Driver Circuitry supporting faster SPI and JTAG programming

Enhanced I/O ESD and Over-Voltage Protection
  • All programmer I/O pins are fully ESD and Over-Voltage protected.
  • ESD energy is absorbed using ESD Protection Circuitry
  • Rail-to-rail protection. All I/O signals are clamped to VCC rail and GND.
  • +12V and -7V Fault Protection on each programmer I/O pin
  • Overshoot suppression.
  • Programmer I/O Circuitry is still protected even if Programmer Controlled Power Supply is off as Line Driver protection is permanently powered from programmer +5.0V.
  • Target System can be safely powered from an independent power supply without any power sequencing issues.

Faster SPI programming
  • Supports the maximum SPI frequency of 3.6864 MHz in 'Hardware SPI' mode
  • Target AVR device must be running at 16MHz or higher to support this SPI frequency
  • Operation at 3.6864 MHz gives very fast programming times for large FLASH size devices

Faster JTAG programming

  • Supports JTAG clock frequencies up to 4MHz
  • Supports JTAG Chain programming including JTAG Chain Verification
  • 'FAST JTAG' setting must be selected in the 'Programming Project' to use the fastest JTAG algorithm
  • Requires firmware 3.07 or above to implement the fastest JTAG programming times

AVR Internal RC Oscillator Calibration (on-board 32 kHz Oscillator)

  • SFM Module features on-board precision 32.768 kHz Oscillator for performing accurate calibration of Atmel AVR internal RC oscillators.
  • The CALCON Module is therefore no longer required if the EQ-SFM-MAX-V1.3 Module is installed inside the PP3-MK2 Programmer.
  • The 32.768 kHz oscillator signal can be switched to either the SPI 'MOSI' pin or JTAG 'TDO' pin under programmer project control.
  • Any I/O CONNector (EQ-IO-CON) Module can now be used with the programmer.
  • Any legacy 'Oscillator Calibration' projects using the CALCON Module will need to be recompiled for use with the EQ-SFM-MAX-V1.3 Module.

Safe to use when Target System is independently powered
  • If the power to the Target System is not supplied / controlled by the programmer then it is possible to have ESD and transient conditions on the programmer Vcc and I/O pins when the programmer is not driving the I/O pins.
  • The programmer driver circuit is protected against ESD and over voltage conditions which may occur from the Target System.
  • The programmer / driver circuitry can still be damaged by ESD if the programmer  is not powered on when the ESD event happens.

User-replaceable module minimises production down time
  • SFM Module can be replaced on-site in under 10 minutes
  • Simply remove the programmer lid, remove the existing SFM Module and insert the new one
  • Changing the SFM Module fixes most faults where the programmer has been damaged with ESD or over-voltage

How do I swap the Special Function Module ?
  • The Special Function Module is located inside the PPM3-MK2 programmer main enclosure.
  • To swap the module, remove the case fixing screws, remove the existing module and replace it with the new one.
